WHY WOULD I WANT A PROFESSIONAL BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHER?
Giving birth is arguably the most life-altering and rewarding experience a woman will ever go through. These are moments that only happen once, and there are no "do overs". In the haze of excitement and nerves, the details of your birth experience are often forgotten or missed. Professional birth photography allows mothers to see and relive all the big and small moments of their journey for the rest of their life.
Hiring a professional birth photographer allows your partner or support person to be fully present with you, instead of behind a camera. The moments you'd most want captured are the same moments where everyone is involved!
I'M A PRETTY MODEST PERSON. HOW GRAPHIC ARE YOUR PHOTOS?
I make every effort to capture your birth story modestly. Unless requested otherwise, I try to shoot from over mom's shoulder or by her side. There are times when shots will allow some nudity, but these photos will be excluded from blog posts and public platforms, unless you'd like them to be shared.
We will discuss in advance what sort of images you're comfortable with and what shots are off-limits to you. If there's an image I feel is questionable to share publicly, I will ask your permission first.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HAVE YOU IN THE ROOM DURING MY BIRTH?
Hiring a professional birth photographer means just that - you are hiring a professional. I meet with every mother-to-be before their birth day to go over expectations and your birth plan. I will speak to you as much or as little as you'd like. If you want to chat between contractions, I'd love to. If you'd rather me by a fly on the wall, that's okay too. In the throws of labor, most moms and hospital staff don't even notice I'm there.
WHAT IF MY BIRTH PLAN CHANGES? WHAT IF I HAVE A CESAREAN SECTION?
Birth is unpredictable. In the event things change, I will continue shooting wherever I'm allowed and welcome. Some facilities and providers allow photography during a c-section birth and others don't. I highly recommend discussing this possibility with your provider. In the unlikely event that there is a medical issue with the baby, I will follow the lead of medical staff and parents and shoot until it is inappropriate or ill-advised to do so.
If I am not allowed in the operating room during a cesarean delivery, I will be waiting for you following delivery to photograph these special first moments with your little one.
WHEN SHOULD I BOOK? WILL WE MEET BEFOREHAND?
I only accept 1-2 birth sessions per month to assure the best customer service and availability, so it's very important that you book early. I am often booked months in advance! We will have a casual meeting beforehand to discuss your vision for the birth photos, go over questions and concerns, and most importantly, get to know each other! This meeting can be at a park, coffee shop, or anywhere we can relax and chat. Your partner is welcome to join us at this meeting so we can address their concerns too.
WHAT IF YOU MISS THE BIRTH?
I will make every effort to attend your birth. Births are my passion and I am SO excited to capture yours. I will be on-call for your birth the week before and the week after your due date. If you go into labor outside of this window, by all means, contact me and I will do my best to make it. In the unlikely event that I miss your birth, all monies paid will be put towards your choice of Fresh 48 or Newborn Lifestyle session. I also have a wonderful backup photographer in case of emergency.
WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY?
If any event occurs that requires medical intervention or emergency treatment for you or your baby, I might be asked to leave the delivery room for the remaining duration of your labor and delivery. However, I will still be close by to capture photos of your family and friends waiting for your new arrival, and will return to shooting as the medical staff allows. Keep in mind that the most important thing is that you have a safe delivery, and ultimately your doctor and nurse’s job is more important than mine.
WILL I HAVE TO GET APPROVAL FROM MY HOSPITAL?
Yes, it is your responsibility to get approval from the hospital, doctors, or midwives if a photographer is allowed to photograph the birth of your baby. Please verify the official policies with your doctor/midwife and hospital/birth center, which might differ.
WILL MY PHOTOS BE SHARED ON YOUR WEBSITE?
Birth photography is very personal and intimate. I will only share images if you've signed a model release allowing me to do so. Sharing your photos brings joy to other mothers and can give them a better understanding of what to expect. Ultimately though, the images are for you, and your privacy requests will always be respected. Every time a woman bravely allows me to share her birth story, she is part of the beautiful process of unveiling birth and breaking down the stigma our culture has for birth photography!
