Ninety-nine percent of my clients ask what to wear for family photos. I love this question. I love it so much that I created this guide as well as a Pinterest inspiration board. Pin it, save it, tuck it away for our next session, or just ogle and enjoy. Here are some tips for choosing what to wear for your session with me.
Tip #1: Choose neutral, muted, or pastel colors.
Choose a few colors that will compliment each other, a "color palette". Coordinate your outfits, but don’t match. The examples below show a few color palette ideas. It's easiest to start with one outfit (Mom/Wife since we are the hardest to dress) and then coordinate everyone else. I recommend neutral, muted tones or pastels to help create clean and soft images. Some of our favorite colors are blush/pale pink, ivory, grey, light/pale blue. Please avoid fluorescent or neon colors, logos/characters/writing on your clothing, and try to stick with solids and clean patterns.
Tip #2: Layers and Accessories
Layering is important when choosing what to wear for photos and it’s often overlooked. With the color palettes chosen above, I decided to keep the look minimal and go light on layering.
*Don't let your shoes or socks be overlooked when styling for your session! Sandals, flats, Vans, brown leather shoes are all great options for footwear!
I’m not saying you need to look exactly like this. If you already have ideas, that is perfectly fine. This is meant to be used for inspiration. At the end of the day, it’s really not about the clothing. I’m going to be capturing your FAMILY and that’s the most important thing. So don’t stress, just have fun with it! If you need help or want suggestions, always feel free to shoot me a message (and pictures!).
A few of my favorite websites for online shopping:
For children: Zara, H&M (both have store locations here in Germany!)
For Women: Lulu's, Asos.com, PinkBlush, Morning Lavender, Piper & Scoot
For Men: Anywhere that sells nice button up shirts, Henley shirts, or sweaters! Beige pants are great for a timeless, polished look. H&M, Zara, Gap, J.Crew, Banana Republic. Pair it with some nice leather or canvas shoes to round out your look.
